We matched Ivory Coast, shoulder to shoulder – John Mikel Obi

mikelSuper Eagles midfielder,John Obi Mikel, who played a sterling role in Nigeria’s surprising 2-1 result over Ivory Coast, said that the Nigerian team did their homework in curtailing the Ivorians.
Mikel stepped up to the plate when needed, putting in a nice tackle in the eighteen yard box, after a nice pass came to Lacina Traore, who was clear on goal, in the last minutes of the game to nick the ball off the Anzhi striker.
The 25-year old midfielder said that, their ability to stifle the Ivorians and prevent them from playing their brand of football was what helped the Super Eagles to victory.
“We’re very happy with our achievement,” Mikel was quoted to have said on Goal.com
“A big congratulations to Ivory Coast for their achievement so far in the tournament but today we knew that they’re a good team so if we were able to work together and play for each other on the pitch, then we could stop them” Mikel added.
“And that’s exactly what we have done today.”
Despite the famous victory,Mikel refused to be carried away, but was rather coy as he said that the Super Eagles still have a semi-final fixture with Mali to negotiate.
“We still have a semi final to play. We have to keep taking each game one at a time and hopefully if we manage to play well like we did today, we will be very pleased with ourselves,” he concluded.
